How to Play 8 Ball Pool
The main objective is simple: pocket all the balls from your assigned group solids or stripes and then legally sink the 8 ball to win the match. Be careful though: potting the 8 ball too early results in an instant loss.
The game begins with a break shot, where you strike the racked balls to open the table. To make a legal break, you must either pocket a ball or send at least four balls to touch the cushions. If no ball is pocketed, the table remains open and neither player is assigned a group yet.
Solids or Stripes Explained
After the break, the table is open. The first player to legally pocket a ball chooses their group automatically either solids or stripes. From that point on, you must always hit your own group first.
If you’re playing stripes, the cue ball must contact a striped ball first. The shot must also result in either a potted ball or any ball touching a cushion. Failing to meet these conditions counts as a foul, giving your opponent ball in hand, allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere on the table.
Common Fouls
- Hitting your opponent’s ball first
- No ball touching a cushion after contact
- Pocketing the cue ball
- Pocketing the 8 ball before clearing your group
- Potting an opponent’s ball before touching your own
Once all balls from your group are cleared, you earn the right to shoot the 8 ball. Sink it legally, and the match is yours.
